Importance of the Month of Rajab

3/10/2019

Rajab is one of the Islamic months listed in the Islamic calendar. Every Islamic month has its significance which is recognized by every Muslim around the world. But four Islamic months are most sacred months in Islamic calendar in which Rajab also includes. If we consider the contextual form, then literal meaning of Rajab is “respect”. In Holy Quran Allah Almighty says about this sacred month in these words: “Undoubtedly, the number of months with Allah is twelve in the Book of Allah since the day He created heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred. This is the right religion. Therefore, do not wrong yourselves in these months.” (Quran, 9:36)

Rajab is known as the month of Allah Almighty. There is a great significance of the month of Rajab in the sight of Allah (SWT). The month of Rajab is the key to the opening of the month of blessings and goodness. Seeking Forgiveness, Istaghfaar in the moth of Rajab has tremendous importance. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to say:
“Rajab is a month of seeking forgiveness, so seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT); He is verily the Forgiver, the Merciful. It is highly recommended to repeat ‘Astaghfirullaah”.

We all know yet Ramadan is considered as the month of fasting, but it is the month of Rajab that lays down the road to Ramadan the month of blessings and goodness. There are days in the month where fasting acts as an extra reward for every Muslim. Our beloved Prophet (PBUH) says about the importance of Rajab in these words, “In Paradise, there is a canal named Rajab. Its water is whiter than milk, cooler than ice and sweeter than honey. The one who observes even a single fast in Rajab, he/she will be entitled to drink its water.”

Fasting is one of the most recommended acts during this spiritual season. It becomes Wajib during the month of Ramadan, but is highly recommended during the months of Rajab and Sha’baan. As will be noted from the Hadith above and others to follow, fasting, be it for only one day during these months, is rewarded with untold bounties.
Salmaan Farsi narrates that the Final messenger of Allah (SAW) said that there is a day in the month of Rajab on which if a person fasts and does Qiyaamul Lail (night vigil ) on that night, he will receive rewards like a person who fasts for 100 years and does Qiyaamul Lail for nights of 100 years. This night is the night of the 27th (Rajab) and the day of the 27th (Rajab). This is the day on which Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was appointed to Messengerhood, (Ghuniyatut Talibeen, Tarteeb Shareef page 781)

The Greatness of the Month of Rajab Translated by Saleem Bhimji from the book Al-Muraqabat written by Ayatullah âajj Mirza Jawad Malik Tabrizi (may Allah sanctify his soul)

This month is one of the noblest of months for the following reasons:
1. It is one of the Sacred Months (there are four of these in the Islamic calendar).
2. It is one of the months of Supplication and even during the period of Ignorance (before the coming of Islam) this was well known amongst the people and the Arabs of that time would always wait and anticipate the coming of this month so that they could supplicate and ask their needs.
3. This month is the month of Amir Al-Mo’minin `Ali ibn Abi talib (peace be upon him) just as it has been mentioned in the ahadith and as we are also told that the month of Sha`ban is the month of the Messenger of Allah (prayers be upon him and his family) and the Month of Ramadhan is the month of Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him).
4. The first night of this month is one of the four nights in the year which it has been emphasized that we should stay awake in prayer and worship.
5. In relation to the 15thof this month, it has been mentioned that it is the most loved of days in the sight of Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him) and it is the time when we should perform the action known as
“Istiftah”
6. The 27th of this month is the date when the official appointment of the Noble Prophet (prayers be upon him and his family) took place and it is the day when the mercy and blessings of Allah (Glory and Greatness be to Him) were physically manifested upon this Earth – something which this world has never seen from its inception until today.
This is a glimpse at some of the benefits of this month, as we do not possess the ability and capacity to fully understand and appreciate all of the greatness that is accompanied with this month.

"Quran has a splendid exterior and an obscure interior. Its wonders don’t end, its marvels don’t finish, and darkness can only be illuminated by it."
“Splendid exterior” means eloquent words and verses. “Obscure interior” means deep meaning and several layers of interpretation.
Imam Ali tells you that if you want to come out of darkness which surrounds your life, then the only guide which you can use is Quran.

Shia Quran Teacher Online
When reciting the Quran, it is vital for us to recognize that it contains the best and most beautiful words, and thus recite it in the most beautiful manner. We should use our best voice when we are reciting the word of God. We should not scream nor use a very faint voice. God states, “And recite the Quran in a distinct tone.(73:4) In a powerful narration, Imam Ali (p) advises us to, “Recite it [the Quran] clearly, and do not cut it like the cutting of hair (or do not read it like poetry), and do not scatter it like the scattering of sand (or do not read it like prose). Reflect on its wonders and motivate with it your hard hearts. Never think how to finish the [Chapter] quickly.

Historical Ways of Quran LearningProphet Muhammad (pbuh) was the first ever Quran teacher and his companions were the first ever Quran learners. The chain of Quran learning started from there. Later mosques were established. The teachers used to be present at the mosque or madrassas and then student would go to learn the Holy Quran from their teachers and get their daily lessons. This method is also applicable in some fractions of the world now. However, new and modern ways have already been introduced in the ways in which Muslims learn the Holy Quran.
Learning Quran in MosquesOne of the most common and conventional ways of Quran learning is by going to the mosques. Mosques were the only places in the ancient times where the message of Allah Almighty was spread. • Audio Recitation
A great app should also have audio recitation as it will help the learners to correct any mistakes that they make in their pronunciation

It is admitted fact that every moment, second, minute, hour, day or night that is spent in the submission of Allah Almighty and His Beloved Prophet (pbuh) is exceedingly meaningful and precious. But there are some days, nights and months which have their own weight and Allah, the compassionate, lays immense stress upon them to unveil their importance to his rationale creatures.
Among those months, those hold much importance is Moharram, Rajab, Sha’ban and the holy month of Ramadhan.
The Holy Month of Sha’ban is one of the blessed months that holds much too for us from the mercy, compassion and kindness of Allah Almighty. This is the month that is the best of all months in the estimation of Allah. Its days are the best among the days; its nights are the best among the nights. Its hours are the best among the hours. It is the month that gave time its spirituality, and thus made its days the best days and its hours the best hours. It is preparatory month that welcomes the holy month of Ramadhan. If we study the life of our beloved Prophet (pbuh), He used to avail himself the moments of this month to the utmost and spend more time in adoration, submission of Allah almighty and seek salvation and earn the infinite mercy of Allah.
Once the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said
“Sha’ ban is my month”
Hazrat Imam Ali bin Hussein Al-Zaynul Aabideen (A.S.) told his companions:"The Holy Prophet (pbuh) used to observe fast during the whole month of Sha'ban. Therefore whoso, in love of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), wishes to seek nearness to Allah and receive bounties, favors and rewards in this world and in the Hereafter, must connect Sha'ban with Ramadan (in the matter of fasting and special prayers).

Number forty is mystic in Theosophy. According to the Islamic culture if someone practices a good deed constantly during forty days, it would be his inseparable attribute and lead to descending of God's blessing. In some religions forty days and forty nights praying has been special position.

When Prophet Moses prayed forty nights; found the ability to hear the words of God, "And when We appointed a time of forty nights with Musa, then you took the calf (for a god) after him and you were unjust." [Holy Quran 2:5
Holy prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "Whoever dedicates himself to God for forty days, will find springs of wisdom sprout out of his heart and flow on his tongue."

Commemorating of the fortieth day of deeds by their family and giving alms is one of the common customs among some of the Muslims. The fortieth day of Imam Hussain 's martyrdom is called Arbaeen. In this day Shiites commemorate Imam Hussain's revolution. These forty days are a suitable opportunity for people to develop the love of Imam Hussain and hate his murderers, in their hearts. Forty consecutive days, from Ashura up to Arbaeen, also is a national ceremony of aversion announcement from oppressors of the history.

In the first Arbaeen, Jabir Ibn Abdullah was the person who pilgrimage the holy tombs of Imam Hussain . According to some narrations, captive family of Imam Hussain , in the way of returning to Medina from Sham, visited Jabir and pilgrimage tombs of Ashura's martyrs.

O Hussain, commemoration of your revolution from Ashura up to Arbaeen makes the world pay attention to the message of the resurrection. Ashura is martyrdom day of the history makers and Arbaeen is pilgrimage day of Ashura makers.

Arbaeen philosophy shows itself, and we can teach martyrdom lesson from this class and prepare ourselves in order to help our master Hazrat-e-Mahdi (May God hasten his reappearance).
Arbaeen Aamal and Ziyarat:
20th Safar is the day of Arbaeen, the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain , his friends and relatives in Karbala on 10th Muharram.

According to Imam Hassan al-Askari today it is highly desirable to:

1. Pray 51 Rakat Namaz (Salaat) during the 24 hours of the day of Arbaeen, [17 Rakats in Wajib (obligatory) and 34 Rakats in Naafilah].
2. Be in Karbala for Ziyarat of Imam Hussain and other martyrs, and if it is not possible, then recite Ziyarat of Imam Hussain and the other martyrs of Karbala from wherever you are.
3. To put the forehead on the earth (preferably earth of Karbala) in prostration.
4. To pronounce "Bismillah Hir Rahman Nir Raheem" in clear and loud voice while praying the Salaat.

Imam Jafar al-Sadiq has advised the faithful to recite the Ziyarat of the day of Arbaeen. [Please refer to Mafatihul Jinan, Supplications and other Ziyarat books for Ziyarat of Arbaeen.

After the recitation of Ziyarat, pray two Rakat Salaat.
